Indigenous peoples--Colonisation Reviews and Numerical Ratings
4 Well-done parody keeps viewers engaged and gets the point across. It is simple but sharp, and could be effective for students at a wide range of levels of study. The video satirizes the journey of the ethnographer, in which everything is simplified, and touches on ethical issues in research by showing the consequences of eliminating the voice of the “researched”. Although this is an Australian video, it is relevant to Canada. It demonstrates state relations and forces students to recognise elements of their own culture. Perhaps the video could be offensive? Discussion would be required, especially among students new to Sociology. Elena Chou, Mike Follert, Sabina Heilman, Julia Hemphill, Diego Llovet, & Shannon Thomson 1.5 A good teaching tool for introductory students. It challenges our commonsensical way of viewing the world, and is reductionist but purposely so. The video offers a critique not only of the dominant culture/group but of how ethnographic research is done. We would probably use just a clip of it, depending on course context, and maybe pair it with another pedagogical tool. 2 Edgy at first, then too heavy-handed & repetitive.
