The YU Experience Hub Is Here To Help!

By Brittany Maguire

Covid-19 has brought about the need for a rapid shift to remote experiential education, and while this kind of delivery is new to many and brings about new challenges, remember the YU Experience Hub is here to assist you with your EE journey!

The YU Experience Hub has created a new Going Remote webpage for faculty and students that highlights resources available to support remote experiential education activities, whether it is in the classroom, out in the community or at work!

One of the resources on the page is a tip sheet for students working remotely. We have heard from many students that working remotely is a new experience that has both pros and cons. Maureen Kizito, Business & Society Student, shared:

The challenges internet connection, distance and Zoom meeting times were a challenge for group work…. overall, my remote experience in any context has been good. No traffic delays to get to class, everything is done in the comfort of my home, that’s my experience so far with going remote at York University 2020”!

The tip sheet provides information on setting up a home office, communicating online, managing time effectively and engaging in self-care.

Thanks to the support of the Academic Innovation Fund (AIF), the YU Experience Hub was able to create three short videos on how the Covid-19 pandemic has created innovative opportunities that allow students to engage in classroomcommunity and work focused EE remotely. The videos use animation while incorporating testimonials from a faculty member, employer, and student to display the diverse remote EE opportunities available to York University students, even during this unprecedented time.

In one of the videos, Stuart Browne, CEO of Pycap Venture Partners, explained how he hired interns from the Schulich School of Business to help entrepreneurs navigate through an economic crisis, which is a unique experience created by the pandemic. This is just one example of how EE contributes to helping tackle the challenges the pandemic has caused.
