Changing Classroom Paradigms: Accommodations and Student Retention in the Pandemic Era – Oct. 5

With astronomically inflated housing and food costs, students of all levels are facing more barriers to staying in classes. The barriers to education are multiplied for marginalized students such as disabled students. Taking an intersectional perspective, this workshop will rethink disability accommodations and apply universal and inclusive design into classroom construction. By utilizing multimodal strategies in the classroom, more students can thrive in and finish classes. In addition, through thoughtful classroom design, accommodations can be integrated without having to make “special exceptions” for a single person. Applying universal design principles is meant to meet all students’ needs, but discussing accommodations that go beyond the classroom may still be required. We will discuss how to respond to students with accommodation needs.
