Integrating Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility when Teaching Lab Courses – Mar. 8
Have you ever been in a teaching situation where you felt unprepared to support a student with accommodations, or had to diffuse an argument on a sensitive cultural subject between students, or just felt like there was more you could do to ensure your teaching is inclusive? This virtual workshop was designed as a primer on topics in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) for lab demonstrators and will include interactive discussions with peers on navigating these situations with tact and care. Topics include information on official guidance from TA handbooks at York on your role as a TA, as well as how to take the extra steps to ensure you’re teaching in an equitable manner, and brainstorming sessions on strategies to respectfully navigate scenarios. Although the workshop was designed with Faculty of Science graduate students in mind, students from any faculty are welcome to join and add their valued experiences to the conversation.
This session is facilitated by Nicholas Bragagnolo (he/him), a 4th year PhD Candidate in the department of Chemistry who has been on the Faculty of Science (FSc.) EDI Committee since Fall 2021. He has completed an international course on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Facilitation with the American Crystallographic Association called “Angles of Difference DEI Facilitation Training”. Nicholas has also completed the Teaching Assistant Certificate in Teaching and the Senior Teaching Assistant courses offered by the Teaching Commons at YorkU. This workshop was a collaborative effort with members of the Teaching Commons, the FSc. EDI committee and the Working for Inclusivity in Chemistry (WICYU) group, and Nicholas would like to thank all of those who offered their advice and provided their voices in making this workshop.
