Practical AI Webinar Series (Online ~ June-September 2024)
In this series of 1-hour webinars, we will use each session to explore one topic related to teaching and learning in a time of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and develop one strategy or tool to integrate into your courses. Whether you are looking to actively make use of GenAI with your students or are looking for ways to critically discuss the implications of this new technology in class, join us for some targeted conversations and practical applications.
Practical AI: Building Digital AI Literacy in the Classroom

How can we support students in becoming effective, critical, informed users of GenAI? We explore the PAIR (Problem-AI-Interaction-Reflection) framework developed by King’s College London as a simple, flexible way to structure student learning about responsible AI use. By the end of this session, participants will be able to draft an in-class activity for engaging students as critical participants in the GenAI landscape.
Practical AI: Rethinking the Spectrum of Academic Integrity

How does the presence of GenAI in the postsecondary landscape shift our understanding of academic integrity? We explore Matt Miller’s approach to cheating as a spectrum, with discussion of where and how we might each draw the line in our specific course contexts. By the end of this session, participants will be able to distinguish the acceptable use of GenAI from the unacceptable, tailored to the specific learning goals and assessment strategies of their courses.
Practical AI: AI for Student Research Projects

How might students make use of GenAI for course-related research projects? We explore the possibilities of one powerful AI tool, SciSpace, for removing some common barriers to student success as researchers and streamlining the research process. By the end of this session, participants will be able to integrate this scholarly AI resource into research-related assessments in their courses.
Practical AI: Introducing Students to Co-Writing with AI

What does authorship mean when GenAI can do so much? We explore the SHARE (Streamline, Heighten, Arrange, Ratify, Evidence) framework for scholarly co-writing with AI, developed at York’s Teaching Commons and pilot-tested over summer 2024. By the end of this session, participants will be able to introduce students to an adaptable approach for academic writing alongside AI while maintaining accountable authorship.
