Culture at the heart of the SDGs. A theatre in Toronto with a Whole-SDG Approach

When you hear about goals laid out by something as big and prestigious as the United Nations, it’s easy to feel like they are something outside of your control. Had you asked me a couple of years ago whether Bygone could ever be following the example of the UN I probably would have laughed and said, “not with no funding!”, having assumed we were too small to make any sort of difference. What our Board President, Dr Mark Terry, has pointed out, however, is that there is no such thing as “too small” when it comes to making positive change. By committing to adhering to these SDGs we hope to not only make a difference on the micro level, here in Toronto indie theatre, but to inspire others to look at how they too can move towards a more sustainable future. We are adding our Sustainability Mandate to our Education Initiatives so that we can pass on what we learn to the students we work with, our casts and crew, and the community at large. We aim to become a leader in sustainable theatre here in Toronto, and our first step is committing to the following goals.

Emily Dix – Executive Director, Bygone Theatre

Bygone Theatre has made the decision to commit to following the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The plan is a list of the 17 goals outlined by the UN, and what Bygone Theatre will commit to doing to best meet the SDGs. The PDF version available here.
