The Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCEs on ESD) is a global programme initiated and administered by the United Nations University’s Institute for the Advanced Studies on Sustainability (UNU-IAS). Since its launch in 2005, to coincide with beginning of the UN Decade of ESD (2005-2014), the RCE sites have grown to now engage over 150 cities and regions around the world. The RCE concept is to explore how the core elements of ESD, i.e., education, public awareness, and training, can help to create more sustainable communities. The RCE networks work both locally to bring ESD policy into local practice, and collectively by collaboratively sharing their expertise in a “Global Learning Space”.
