Created in 1992, the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme serves as think tank to UNESCO and as a prime means of building the capacities of higher education and research institutions through the exchange of knowledge, sharing, in a spirit of international solidarity. The network consists of more than 850 UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs and one of 44 UNITWIN networks. Under the guidance of UNESCO, partners promote North-South, South-South cooperation, often in partnership with NGOs, foundations, and public and private sector organizations to play an important role in the field of higher education.
UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks open avenues for the higher education and research community to join forces with UNESCO to contribute to the implementation of the SDGs and various aspects of UNESCO’s education, science, and culture programmes.
