President and Vice-Chancellor Lorna R. Marsden and York Board of Governors member Seymour Schulich were honoured last week at a special Salute to the City event sponsored by Cadillac Fairview on the occasion of the Toronto Dominion Centre's 35th anniversary. Awards were bestowed on those who had made a significant contribution to the city. Schulich was chosen in the Community Service category and Marsden was chosen in the Education section.
Schulich, who is a major benefactor of York's Schulich School of Business and York itself, also gives generously of his time to the board of governors, including the Investment Committee. As well, he is a major benefactor of Sunnybrook Medical Centre. Schulich is chairman and chief executive officer of Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation and has served on the boards of Mount Sinai Hospital, Junior Achievement of Canada and the World Gold Council. In addition, he is vice-chairman emeritus of the pension fund management firm Beutel, Goldman and Company Limited.
Marsden was chosen not only for her contributions to York University but also for her involvement in the following areas: research in the area of social change, including labour force, the labour market and population activities; director of several organizations, such as Manulife Financial, Gore Mutual Insurance Company, Westcoast Energy Inc., the Conference Board of Canada, the Institute for Work and Health, and the Canadian Landmine Foundation; member of the Toronto 2008 Olympic Bid Committee; and co-Chair of the University and Colleges Division Campaign Cabinet of the United Way of Greater Toronto.
The Salute to the City award program began in 1997. This year there were 77 recipients in the following eight categories: Performing and Visual Arts, Business, Community Service, Design, Education, Health/Medicine, Literature and Sports.
