York University Foundation ads in The Globe and Mail Oct. 17 proclaimed the addition of three more stellar corporate members to its board of directors: John Hunkin, Chair and CEO of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce group of companies, Robert W. Martin, a retired president and CEO of Consumers’ Gas and currently Chair of Acres Inc., and Steve T. Mirkopoulos, vice-president of Cinespace Film Studios and president of the Ontario Film & Television Owners Association. Hunkin and Martin are members of York University’s Board of Governors. Mirkopoulos created the Hellenic Studies Chair at York University.

Jack Granatstein, professor emeritus and renowned Canadian historian, unleashed a controversy with the publication of Who Killed Canadian History?, according to the National Post Oct. 17. But The Contested Past, edited by Marlene Shore, co-Chair of York’s history department, and published recently by the University of Toronto Press, suggests the controversy was just a minor battle in a century-long academic turf war. “Controversy has afflicted professional historians in Canada since day one,” Shore told the Post. Much of it had to do with questions like: “What is Canada, what is it national identity, and what should the role of the historian be?”
