Prof. Thomas Salisbury, Chair, York Department of Mathematics & Statistics, Faculty of Arts, has been appointed deputy director of The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, beginning Aug. 1, 2003. He will be on leave from York during his three-to-four-year term of office. He joined York University in the mid-1980s, and has held visiting positions at Stanford, Edinburgh, Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and the Fields Institute.
Salisbury”s research includes probability theory and actuarial finance. He is the author of over two dozen papers, is on the editorial board of several journals in both probability and statistics, and is currently writing a book of which the working title is Parabolic Martin Boundaries. He has been very active in Fields Institute activities. In particular, he is one of the organizers of the Probability Year 1998-1999, and was one of the organizers of the successful Quantitative Finance seminar.
In addition, Salisbury has been involved with the Toronto-based Individual Finance and Insurance Decision Centre, of which he is secretary/treasurer. He has been very active in the Canadian Mathematical Society including holding terms as vice-president for Ontario, Chair of the publications committee and editor-in-chief of the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin. He is also active in the Statistical Society of Canada.
The Fields Institute is a center for mathematical research activity – a place where mathematicians from Canada and abroad, from business, industry and financial institutions, can come together to carry out research and formulate problems of mutual interest. It aims to promote mathematical activity in Canada and to help expand the application of mathematics in modern society.
