A consortium called SmartRide went public with a proposal for a 106-kilometre light-rail transit system linking Toronto with Peel and York regions -- including connections to York University -- to spur the debate about public transit solutions to gridlock in the Greater Toronto Area, reports The Toronto Star and Canada News-Wire Dec. 13.
To proceed or not to proceed in pot case
"There’s a certain inconsistency in announcing decriminalization and going into court and saying this substance is sufficiently harmful to warrant a criminal sanction," observes Alan Young, Toronto lawyer and Osgoode Hall Law School professor, in an Ottawa Citizen story Dec. 13. He was referring to the confusion over whether the Supreme Court of Canada should proceed with a federal government case against marijuana smoking given that Justice Minister Martin Cauchon says he is going to decriminalize the drug. Young represents former hemp-store owner Christopher Clay, one of three litigants in the case.
