Arthur Sullivan”s score is lively (and still very recognizable to audiences today) while W.S. Gilbert”s plot involves romance, adventure, secrets and scheming. Frederic, the pirates” apprentice, was born on Feb. 29, and discovers that he won”t be 21 until he”s 84; the pirate king meets Major General Stanley; the pirates meet the major general”s 12 daughters; and the local constabulary tries to keep order.

Fred Thury, artistic director of VCP, has been associated with Vanier College since 1970, and has directed formal theatrical presentations at the college since his production of Under Milkwood in 1972. Through his leadership of VCP, he has inspired generations of students who love theatre and music and who return often to provide support and assistance to the company.

This production benefits from the stage management by Deb Girard, scenic design by Ana Henriques, costumes by Sharon Hann, and directorial assistance by Jeff Stevenson. Vanier College alumni, John-Paul Yovanoff and John Beers, provide additional production support for this presentation.

Pirates of Penzance, which began March 6, runs to March 22 with evening performances at 8pm and matinee performances on Sundays, March 9 & 16, at 2pm. All performances will take place in the Studio Theatre, 258 Vanier College, York University. Tickets are $12 general admission ($10 students/seniors) and can be reserved by calling Vanier College at ext. 40023. Group rates are available.
