York student Junjie Guo has received a total of $40,000 in funding through an internship program to work on his project entitled “Query Sampling,” as part of the commitment by Communications and Information Technology Ontario, or CITO, to assist students. Half the funding was from CITO and half from IBM.
York is one of nine Ontario universities to receive a share of the $757,000 in funding for internships in high-tech student research and student scholarships. The other universities are Carleton, Guelph, McMaster, Ottawa, Queen’s, Ryerson, Toronto and Waterloo. Recipients were announced recently at the University of Waterloo by CITO President and CEO Darin Graham, who commented, “The future of Ontario’s high-tech industry lies in the talent we’re nurturing today.”
This year CITO introduced the Student Research Excellence Scholarship program to recognize and reward student research excellence at Ontario universities. It is providing $30,000 in funding, included in the pledged $757,000.
Since last year, CITO has awarded funding for 17 student internships through a recently expanded program that matches senior research students with private-sector companies looking for new, marketable ideas. In this round of funding, CITO is providing $320,000 and industry partners are kicking in $407,000 in cash and in-kind support. Most of the students who receive internships are doing thesis work at the masters or PhD level with a focus on communications and information technology.
