Baseball Lions look for a winning season

York’s Lions baseball squad begins the season competing in the Blue Jay Cup tournament starting today, Sept. 4. A strong core of 12 returning players and an impressive group of first-year athletes play their first game against McMaster at 4pm today, Sept. 4, at Conorvale Park and battle Wilfrid Laurier Friday, Sept. 5, at 9am at the Skydome.

The tournament marks the opening of the 2003 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) baseball season. It involves all OUA baseball teams and counts towards the season standings. The final will be played Sunday, Sept. 7 at 5pm at the SkyDome.

The York Lions baseball squad is led by sophomore head coach Colin Cummins. With last year behind them, York is now looking to build a winner. "Last year, 15 of our 22 players had never played above the rep level before," says Cummins. "But, we stuck together, persevered through a losing season and learned how to play ball. We now know what it takes to win. Our returning players gained a lot of experience last year; we will use them as our catalyst."
