Construction to begin on two new buildings

A message from Facilities Development

Construction will begin soon on two new buildings on York’s Keele campus – the General Academic Building East (GAB-E) and General Academic Building West (GAB-W) – with completion set for August 2005.

The buildings will provide classrooms and lecture halls for approximately 4,000 students and  accommodate increased enrolment expected for 2005.

They will also consolidate specialized teaching spaces for theatre, dance and music programs. The two buildings will house the Art Gallery of York University, a visual arts gallery and space for faculty offices and research and innovation initiatives.

The west site, which is approximately 6,000 square metres in size, will be located on the west side of Burton Auditorium. The east site, which is approximately 24,000 square metres, will be located east of the Centre for Film and Theatre. Together these sites will complete the southern face of the University’s Harry W. Arthurs Common. Each site is designed to architecturally relate to the adjacent buildings and will be linked by colonnades.

The construction contract was awarded to the design and build team of PCL Constructors of Canada Inc. and B+H Architects/Zeidler Grinnell Partnership.

Further information bulletins will be posted as the project continues. Any questions or concerns can be directed to muddy@yorku.ca.
