York University is helping its students reach out to the world this summer under a new internship program organized by York International, the University’s office responsible for promoting all aspects of York's international activities.
This unique program will enable York undergraduate and graduate students to gain international and cross-cultural work experience through placements in Canada and abroad in regions as diverse as South America, Europe and Southeast Asia.
Open to senior York students from various disciplinary backgrounds, these internship positions are three-month placements starting in May 2004. Up to 25 students selected in an open competition will be offered placements with an award of $3,000.
"This internship program represents a significant financial investment by the University and shows further evidence of York’s commitment to internationalization," said Adrian Shubert, professor of history & associate vice-president international. "We hope to increase the number of available internships in successive years."
The internship placements, many of which have been arranged through the cooperative efforts of York faculty members, include placements in Bangladesh, Canada, Germany, Greece, India, Mexico, Peru, Spain and South Africa. The program is unique in that most internship programs expect students to find their own placements and sometimes pay their own expenses. Opportunities exist for students in a variety of fields, including art history, education, engineering, environmental science, history, international development studies, international studies, languages, mathematics, and physics. Several placements will require students to have foreign language proficiency.
