TRY Cup action resumes this weekend at York’s Tait MacKenzie Centre as the York Lions host the Ryerson University Rams on Friday, Feb. 13, and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, Feb. 14, in back-to-back basketball doubleheaders.
The Lions are going to have to play with a sense of urgency since they will have no remaining TRY Cup games after this Saturday. York has played 16 games and will wrap up their portion of the TRY Cup schedule this weekend. The Lions hold a 10-6 record and trail U of T by two points, with the Varsity Blues holding an 11-3 record and two games in hand. Ryerson picked up their first win in TRY Cup competition last week and are 1-13 after 14 TRY Cup outings.
What is the TRY Cup?
The TRY Cup, with the acronym TRY representing the University of Toronto, Ryerson University and York University, is a season-long competition that includes six sports and 24 different teams. The Toronto-area university with the most victories in TRY competition will claim the inaugural TRY Cup and with it, bragging rights in the Greater Toronto Area.
The 20-game schedule opened on Sept. 27, 2003, and will continue through a five-month schedule, wrapping up with a basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21, when the Ryerson Rams visit U of T. York, Ryerson and U of T combine to support over 1,600 intercollegiate athletes in 26 different sports every year.
