Perk up your French, rev up your laughter

Hone your French and get set for a hilarious evening of comedy – in French. Theatre Glendon presents Alfred Jarry’s renowned play, Ubu Roi, Wednesday to Saturday, March 17 to 20, at 8pm in York Hall on the University’s Glendon campus, 2275 Bayview Avenue.

Right: Playwright Alfred Jarry (1873-1907)

Ubu Roi was adapted by York drama studies Professor Alain Vercollier of Glendon with his French drama class 2645. A news release describes the play as follows: Ubu Roi depicts Pere and Mere Ubu, a mythical and funny pair, who in their selfishness, their greed and their dangerous spontaneity, constantly surprise us. These two anti-heroes entertain us in ridiculous situations which pre-empt Eugene Ionesco’s work. The constant rhythm of the action, the whimsical and absurd counterparts mixed with the unrealistic set, reminds us that the comedy of Alfred Jarry is astonishingly modern.

Tickets for Ubu Roi are $6 and, for students, $3. For more information or reservations, call the box office at 416-487-6822 or visit the Theatre Glendon Web site.
