Spanish-born Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (often known simply as Cervantes), born in 1547 and called one of the greatest Spanish writers in history, lives on through his most famous literary work, Don Quixote (El Quijote in Spanish).

Cervantes also lives on through such events as the Cervantes Celebration Week, which is being organized by York’s Spanish Resource Centre at Keele campus, Department of Hispanic Studies at Glendon campus, the Consulate General of Spain in Toronto and by the University of Toronto Libraries.
The event takes place Tuesday to Friday, March 30 to April 2, in various locations.
The Spanish Golden Age: An Academic Panel – March 30, 4-7:30pm
Location: Glendon campus, York Hall building, 3rd floor, Senior Common Room
Guest speakers include:
- David Rojinsky, professor of Spanish, University of Toronto, on “Humanism and Empire: Language and Colonial Power”
- José Luis Chamosa, education attaché, Spanish Embassy in Ottawa, on “Classical Translations of Spanish Classical Writers”
- Pedro Bádenas, researcher, Superior Council for Scientific Research in Madrid, on “The real and the imaginary Levante in the Spanish literature during the Golden Age”.
The panel is hosted by the Spanish Resource Centre at York’s Keele campus, the Consulate General of Spain and the Department of Hispanic Studies of York’s Glendon College.
Reading marathon – April 1, 2-8pm (Language of presentation: Spanish)
Location: Robarts Library, 2nd floor, Exhibition area, 130 St. George St., Toronto.
The event will be introduced by the Consul General of Spain and covered by the Spanish media. Spanish language lovers will read excerpts of literary works by Cervantes and other writers of the Spanish Golden Age. The excerpts will be read in the original version

Flamenco music and dance show – April 2, 3-5pm
Location: Keele campus, the Assembly Hall, Room 152, Founders College
Guest performers:
- Esmeralda Enrique & Co. – Enrique is a well-known Toronto based flamenco dancer. Her Spanish Dance Academy, founded in 1982, has been hailed as one of Canada’s most innovative dance schools. Enrique’s ever-expanding repertoire has earned both critical and popular acclaim.
- Guitarist Juan Tomás – Tomás studied flamenco music in Canada, Spain and the United States with internationally acclaimed guitarists. He has performed numerous solo guitar concerts and recorded with CBC Radio and PBS television network in the US. Tomás is the author of several successful albums.
Tickets for the Flamenco Show may be obtained from 2 to 3pm on April 2 (just prior to the show) for $5 at the entrance or at the Spanish Resource Centre, 229 York Lanes, beginning March 22, during the centre’s office hours, 9:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
