This afternoon, the York University Bookstore will sponsor the launch of Strike the Wok: An Anthology of Contemporary Chinese Canadian Fiction, edited by Lien Chao and Jim Wong-Chu. Chao is a York alumna who received her MA in 1986 and her PhD in 1996. The launch will take place from 4:30 to 6pm at the bookstore in York Lanes.
About the Book
This new anthology brings together some of the most exciting works of fiction by contemporary Chinese Canadian writers – representing three generations of Chinese from a variety of backgrounds, including writers born in Canada as well as places outside, presenting a diversity of themes and styles, and set in various geographical locations and time periods. Strike the Wok is a truly kaleidoscopic look at Chinese life from modern Canadian perspectives.
About the Editors
Lien Chao’s York doctoral dissertation, Beyond Silence, published in 1997, was awarded the Gabrielle Roy Award as the best work in Canadian literary criticism that year. She has since published Maples and the Stream, 1999, and Tiger Girl, 2001. She has recently completed her second volume of poetry for publication.

Jim Wong-Chu, co-editor, is founder of the Asian Canadian Writers Workshop, and is author of Chinatown Ghosts, 1986. He has also co-edited two other Chinese Canadian literary anthologies, Many-Mouthed Birds, 1991, and Swallow Clouds, 1999.
