Don Murdoch, manager of national recruitment in York’s Office of Admissions, sent the following article to YFile.

York Admissions’ Recruitment & Marketing team hosted a day-long event for local guidance counsellors on Friday, April 23, at the Glendon campus. The day’s program was chock full of professional development and networking opportunities offered in cooperation with colleagues from the Toronto District School Board. The day was an unqualified success: 90 per cent of the counsellors said the event positively influenced their impression of York University.

Representatives from York Admissions, the nine undergraduate faculties and Student Services gave classroom presentations and participated in a walk-about Information Fair over a brown-bag lunch. Counsellors wandered from table to table asking questions and collecting recruitment brochures.

Other highlights of the day included:

  • A student panel focusing on the experiences of the first Ontario secondary school graduating class after their first year of university;
  • Updated information about York academic programs, admission requirements and application procedures;
  • Strategies for advising students with international credentials;
  • Financial aid, career counselling and school-to-work sessions;
  • A tour of Glendon’s grounds and gardens.

Of the 270 counsellors in attendance, more than 60 per cent indicated it was their first time at Glendon.

After seeing the beautiful grounds and all that the campus offers, counsellors indicated that they will recommend Glendon highly to their students. In fact, based on e-survey feedback, more than 80 per cent of the participants are now more inclined to recommend Glendon to their students. As one satisfied participant said: “I have spoken to eight other guidance counsellors and told them not to miss it next year. We’ll definitely suggest Glendon to our students from now on.”
