Catch a rising star

York Dances delivers a diverse program that is rich in fresh, edgy dance vignettes by third-year dance majors. The show is directed by York University dance alumna Carol Anderson (BA Hons '73), an award-winning choreographer, who currently teaches in York's Dance Department.

Running Nov. 25-27, this showcase of up-and-coming choreographers and dancers will draw you into their expressive movements while engaging your imagination through 15 original dance pieces set to a variety of musical styles.

If there's a theme that runs through this year's program, it's a reflection on relationships, from emotion-driven sexuality to struggling through one's own anguished pathway.

Rebecca Bolden's new work Lila has all the warmth and comfort of a campfire, drawing inspiration from past memories with friends on summer evenings.

In her creation, La Danza Dell'Anima, Melissa Noventa uses movement to intimately explore the struggle of the soul, and the ongoing search for inner peace as one strives for balance in life.

Renée Lefort's highly emotional work, The Grass is Always Greener, will energize the stage with love, lust and heartbreak with the opposite sex, while Nicole Marrello's Croquet poses the provocative question, "At what point does a game change from fun to competitive and become hurtful?"

These, and other stimulating works in solo, pairs and group performances will be spotlighted in two separate series running on alternate nights.

  • Series A: Nov. 25, 6pm; Nov. 26, 8pm; Nov. 27, 6pm
  • Series B: Nov. 25, 8pm; Nov. 26, 6pm; Nov. 27, 8pm

All performances take place in Burton Auditorium on the Keele campus. Admission is $8 at the door. For more information, call 416 650-8030.
