Undefeated volleyball Lions resume league play


York University Lions men's and women's volleyball teams, undefeated in regular season action this year, resume league play on Saturday with a match-up against cross-town rival Toronto.


The men's team, which won silver at its 26th Annual Killer Instinct Excalibur Volleyball Classic on the weekend, is 10-0 on the year and ranked eighth in the nation.

The women's team, which went 0-4 at Toronto's National Invitational Tournament this weekend, is also 10-0 and one of only three teams in the country to remain unbeaten this season. Calgary is 12-0 on the year, while Sherbrooke is 6-0.


Toronto, which stands at 5-5 on the men's side and 8-3 on the women's side, visits the Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday, Jan. 15. The women's game starts at 6pm followed by the men's game at 8pm.


In other Lions action, Kristen Matthews, a third-year English student at York and the top female high jumper in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), became the first athlete to jump 1.81 metres this season with her first-place finish at the Sharon Anderson Memorial Track and Field Meet in Toronto on Saturday.


The men's basketball team lost its first game since November, falling 88-60 to Laurier on Wednesday night. The women's team also lost 66-48 to Laurier.


In men's hockey action, the Lions lost a tough, overtime battle to Utica College (4-3) and tied Guelph (3-3). The women's team collected its third point of the season with a 2-2 to Western at home.
