A researcher and author who specializes in the female voice in the Qur’an will present the next instalment in the highly popular York-Noor Lecture Series for 2004-2005. Professor Amina Wadud is an Islamic studies professor in the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va.
Wadud will present a lecture titled “The Qur’an, Women and Interpretive Possibilities” on Sunday, Feb. 6, at the Noor Cultural Centre in Toronto, and “Female Voice in the Qur’an” on Monday, Feb. 7, at York University. Admission to both lectures is free.

Nationally and internationally known for her ground-breaking book Qur’an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman’s Perspective, Wadud presents the first interpretive reading of the Qur’an by a woman. Muslim progressives have argued that it is not the religion but the patriarchal interpretation and implementation of the Qur’an that have kept women oppressed; in her book, Wadud seeks to validate the female voice in the Qur’an and bring it out of the shadows.
