Bookstore launches new works by Andrea O'Reilly

Andrea O'Reilly was particularly prolific last year. She produced four books, all centering on the theme of motherhood, which is not surprising; the women’s studies professor is director of York’s Centre for Research on Mothering.

York University Bookstore plans to launch O’Reilly’s 2004 output with a reception on Wednesday,Feb. 9, from 4:30 to 6:30pm.


The four books include Toni Morrison and Motherhood: A Politics of the Heart and three edited volumes: From Motherhood to Mothering: The Legacy of Adrienne Rich’s Of Woman Born; Mother Matters: Motherhood as Discourse and Practice; and Mother Outlaws: Theories and Practices of Empowered Mothering.


O’Reilly has previously published three other books on mothering, plans to launch another – Motherhood: Power and Oppression – this year and is currently editing two more (on feminist mothering and maternal autobiography). She is also writing a book on mothering as empowerment and resistance.


O’Reilly not only founded the 550-member Association for Research on Mothering (ARM), the first feminist association devoted to mothering and motherhood, she also founded and edits its Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering.


The mother of three has given many talks and conducted numerous workshops on motherhood and mothering. As well, she has been interviewed widely on motherhood including appearances on "More to Life", "Planet Parent", "Canadian Living Television", "Sex TV", "Next.New.Now" and "Health on the Line".


The book launch on Feb. 9 is also sponsored by the School of Women's Studies and ARM.
