Theatre @ York's annual fringe theatre festival – playGround: Adventures in Theatre – reflects an uncurbed spirit and a risk-taking mind set: just the ticket for theatre-goers looking to experience something original and different. The festival runs for four days, Feb. 8 to 11 in York's Joseph G. Green Studio Theatre, Keele campus.
PlayGround is a collection of new, experimental plays, plays-in-progress, works "ready in the wings" and promising performance projects. All of the works are conceived, written and performed by up-and-coming playwrights, directors and actors from all levels of York's undergraduate theatre program.
An annual, informal event mounted alongside Theatre @ York's mainstage productions, playGround serves as an incubator for student creativity, presentation and production development. It also gives students the opportunity to spotlight their talents outside a course curriculum context, while allowing their peers an opportunity to view the work of their fellow thespians and playwrights.
The playGround playbill features 14 works, showcased in two separate series. Series A runs Feb. 8 and 9 at 7:30pm and Feb. 11 at 1pm, while Series B runs Feb. 9 at 1pm and again on Feb. 10 and 11 at 7:30pm The Joseph G. Green theatre is located in the lobby of the Centre for Film and Theatre.
Admission is $5. For tickets, call the box office at 416-736-5172, ext. 3.
