The York Lions men’s volleyball team has advanced to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship final for the second consecutive year following a 3-2 semifinal victory over the Ryerson Rams on Sunday afternoon. The Lions, who finished the OUA regular season in first place with a record of 18 wins and two losses, will face the Western Mustangs in the best-of-three championship final beginning on Tuesday.
Western finished the regular season in second spot with a record of 15 wins and five losses before advancing to the conference final with a 3-0 semifinal win against McMaster on Sunday. The Lions split two regular season meetings with the Mustangs, winning 3-1 on Oct. 20 at Western and losing 3-1 at York on Feb. 5. The winner will represent the OUA at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) National Championship in Laval, Que. on March 4-6.

The Lions women’s volleyball team advanced to the OUA Final Four Championship with a 3-1 victory over Ryerson on Friday night. York joins Toronto, Laurier and host Western at the Final Four this weekend. The Lions finished the regular season in first place in the OUA East Division with a record of 15 wins and four losses. This weekend’s winner will advance to the CIS National Championship at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon on March 3-5.

The York men’s basketball team hosts the Ottawa Gee-Gees in OUA East semifinal action on Saturday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The Lions finished second in the East with 16 wins and six losses, earning a first-round playoff bye. York won both regular season meetings with the Gee-Gees, winning 64-63 in Ottawa on Nov. 5, and 75-72 on Feb. 5 at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The winner will advance to the OUA East final and earn a berth in the CIS Final 10 National Championship Tournament in Halifax March 17-20.

The York women’s basketball team was eliminated from the post-season following a 59-48 loss to Ottawa in the East Division semifinals last Saturday. The Lions advanced to the semifinal after a 40-36 upset victory over Queen’s.
The Lions track and field team will compete at the OUA Championship this weekend in Windsor. The women’s squad is ranked 10th in the CIS, while the men are ranked 12th. Several York athletes are ranked nationally in their respective events including Patrick Russell (1st, 60m hurdles), Paula McLaughlin (1st, 600m) and Kristen Matthews (1st, high jump). The CIS Championship is scheduled for March 10-12 at the University of Manitoba.
The defending OUA Champion York men’s hockey team finished first in the Mid West Division and earned a first round playoff bye. The Lions will begin second round playoff action the week of Feb. 28 to March 6.
