Catch a rising star

Intercut, an entertaining evening of staged readings from original scripts by aspiring screenwriters from the Department of Film & Video, performed by students from the Department of Theatre, will be presented Feb. 23 in the Eleanor Winters Art Gallery, Room 123 Winters College at 7:30pm.

This collaborative event is a valuable part of the development process, giving student screenwriters the opportunity to hone their technique, while allowing theatre students to bring their acting skills to the stage. Collaboration is crucial in screenwriting because of the intricate interplay between visual and literary qualities.

As with any kind of artist, it is invaluable to have one’s work reviewed, especially for screenwriters who are looking to refine their scripts and take them to a new level of growth. Audience feedback is invited, giving future arts and culture journalists the chance to react critically to the works-in-progress and share their impressions with their peers.

Intercut will feature dramatized excerpts from five screenplays, each about 10 to 20 minutes in length:

• Sissy Ratfink by Katherine Collins (MFA screenwriting) is about a gay detective in 1930s New York who is kicked off the police force due to prejudice and must fight to clear his name.
  
• Peeping Jill by Stephanie Law (first-year BFA screenwriting) offers a look at a young woman in her early 20s, struggling to learn about the laws of privacy and her own place in the world.
  
• Winter by Ran Lewin (third-year BFA screenwriting) tells the story of a 30-year-old man, recently confined to a wheelchair, who must learn that life is what you make it and one must fight for every inch of it.
  
• Sacred Space by Sarah Parker (MFA screenwriting) is an edgy work that takes place in an alternate world in a horrible environmental decline. In this world a young woman must fight for the chance to have a baby the old-fashioned way.
  
• Another Great Mob Movie by Tamar Ditzian (fourth-year BFA screenwriting) is a satirical look at mob movies and Hollywood’s “do anything to get to the top” mentality.

With minimal staging, props and costumes, Intercut features fourth-year theatre students Sarah Dineen, Jason Sharman, Heather Annis, Serge Plourde , Liam Morris, Julia Ainsworth, Eric Hopkins, Sadie St. Denis,  Caralin Ruth, Cassandra Togneri and Vanessa Kobran, and third-year theatre students Michelle Cabral, Eric Hopkins and Arda Zakarian.

Whether you’re a movie enthusiast or a wannabe film critic, you won’t want to miss this event. Admission is free. Refreshments will be provided. Intercut is sponsored by Winters College.
