John Lennox will continue as dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) and associate vice-president graduate for another five-year term beginning July 1, 2005, York President & Vice-Chancellor Lorna R. Marsden has announced.

“The high esteem in which Dean Lennox is held across Canada, internationally and internally at York will be crucial to the success of the immediate future of graduate studies and the longer plan to our 50th anniversary and beyond,” wrote Marsden in a letter to members of the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council.
“We are at a turning point with respect to graduate studies in the Province of Ontario,” wrote Marsden. The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has a planning group to study increasing the number of citizens with graduate degrees and demanding analysis of student retention and degree completion. “This represents a great opportunity to look ahead at both the academic and administrative aspects of graduate studies at our University. The current study underway in FGS is of importance to all faculties as they plan and all faculty members as they consider the successes and challenges in our graduate programs and of individual students,” said Marsden.
Lennox, an English professor who specializes in Canadian life-writing, fiction and literary history, was first appointed dean of Graduate Studies in 2000. He earned a BA from York, an MA from the Université de Sherbrooke and a PhD from the University of New Brunswick.
He is co-author of William Arthur Deacon: A Canadian Literary Life, co-editor of Dear Bill: The Correspondence of William Arthur Deacon, editor of Margaret Laurence-Al Purdy: A Friendship in Letters, co-editor of Challenges, Projects, Texts: Canadian Editing/Défis, projets et textes dans l’edition critique au Canada, and co-editor of Selected Letters of Margaret Laurence and Adele Wiseman.
The Board of Governors approved Lennox’s reappointment at its Feb. 28 meeting.
