Track and field team bound for the national championships

The York Lions track and field team will compete in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) National Championships this weekend at the University of Manitoba.

The York men's squad is ranked eighth in the CIS, while the women are 10th. The Lions medal hopefuls include Patrick Russell, who captured gold and set a new Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and York record in the pentathlon with a score of 3857 at the OUA Championships two weeks ago. He is ranked number one in Canada in the pentathlon and 60m hurdles. Marlon Nangle won gold in the triple jump at the Ontario championships and is ranked number one in Canada.

On the women's side, Paula McLaughlin captured two golds (600m, 4x400m) and a silver (300m) at the OUA Championships. Kristen Matthews is the OUA Champion in the high jump. Matthews is the top-ranked high jumper in the country, while McLaughlin is ranked number one in the 600m.

The OUA champion and No. 7-ranked York University Lions men's volleyball team dropped both their matches at the 2005 CIS Men's Volleyball Championship last weekend in Quebec City. York fell 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 20-25, 22-25) to the No. 2 seed Trinity Western Spartans in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. In the consolation semi-finals on Saturday, the Lions lost 3-1 to the No. 6 Universite de Montreal Carabins (25-21, 23-25, 11-25, 22-25). The No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears captured the championship with a 3-2 win over Trinity Western.

The quest for a second consecutive Queen's Cup came to an end Saturday as the defending OUA champion York men's hockey team was eliminated from the post-season after losing for the second straight time in double overtime to the No. 9 Lakehead Thunderwolves. Peter Cava scored at the 4:21 mark of the second extra period to give Lakehead a 2-1 victory in game two of the best-of-three series on Saturday. The Thunderwolves won the opener 3-2 in double overtime on Wednesday.
