The York University Lions picked up six medals at the 2005 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg this past weekend. On the men's side, York finished 10th, while the women's squad finished in 11th place.
Kristen Matthews, who entered the championship as the nation's top-ranked high jumper, won gold and set a school record with a jump of 1.83m. A transfer student from McMaster University, Matthews also won gold in the high jump at the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 CIS Championships.
Ontario University Athletics (OUA) field MVP Marlon Nangle captured gold in the triple jump with a season-best performance of 15.13m. Nangle entered the championship ranked No. 1 in Canada in the triple jump.
Third-year Lions sprinter Anthony Garber won silver in the 60m dash with a time of 6.81.3 and Paula McLaughlin finished second in the 600m run with a performance of 1:30.80. McLaughlin, who entered the championship ranked number one in the 600m run, was named the OUA female track MVP last week.
