First graduating class of engineers will display work at Design Fair

The work of York’s first fourth-year class in engineering will be on display at a Design Fair in the south lobby of the Computer Science & Engineering Building on March 28. The display, which runs from 8:30am to 5:30pm, includes projects from students in ENG4000, a capstone course in engineering design.

StarhavenYork’s Engineering Program is currently being considered for accreditation as a school of engineering by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (see story in Feb. 18 issue of YFile) and this exhibit celebrates the program itself as much as the work of students in the computer, geomatics and space engineering streams.

Projects in the Design Fair range from consumer devices, such as a car alarm that calls you on your cell phone and even takes a picture of the thief (right), to a life-support space module designed to work in Mars’ cold, low-pressure atmosphere (above). Other projects include a Geospatial Portable Digital Mapper (GeoPod) that can “locate” objects in a fixed area using a laser radar (lidar) system and a Subsurface Utility Mapping System (SUMS), that uses GPS and other accurate methods to record the location of buried pipes and utility cables. The SUMS system is already being used at York by its student creators to locate underground utilities and features at the construction site of the new stadium.

Below is a list of projects and design teams participating in the fair with links to the project Web sites:
