Joni Seager, dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, has been awarded the 2005 Media Achievement Award by the Association of American Geographers (AAG). The award, which is the most prestigious bestowed by the AAG was given to Seager in recognition for her outstanding contribution in bringing geographic work to wide audiences inside and outside of the academy through her two atlases, The Penguin 
Atlas of Women in the World (2003) and The New State of the Earth Atlas (1995), as well as her writing in numerous mass media channels.

Seager is acclaimed for her work in the intersections between feminism and environmentalism and the environmental costs of militaries and militarism, demonstrating an inspiring example of the interdisciplinary approach found in York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies.
She has achieved national and international awards such as the American Library Association’s “Outstanding Reference Book of the Year” award, and the Chicago Geographical Society’s Publications Award. She is also the author of eight other books, including Putting Women in Place: Feminist Geographers Make Sense of the World (with Mona Domosh, 2001), and Earth Follies: Coming to Feminist Terms with the Global Environmental Crisis (1993).
A believer in “writing without borders,” she often produces articles for popular outlets such as Ms. Magazine and The New York Times at the same time as she publishes in academic journals such as Environment and Planning or Gender, Place & Culture.
The Association of American Geographers is a scientific and educational society founded in 1904. It now has more than 8,400 international members.
