Allan Hawes, York Lions women's rugby coach, has been named head coach of Canada's A team for the upcoming Canada Cup women's rugby tournament in Ottawa, June 26 to July 8.
Two Canadian squads will participate in the Canada Cup. In addition to the Senior National team, Canada's A team will also compete in the international tournament. The A team consists of prospective players for the National program. Also competing at the Canada Cup are New Zealand, Argentina, the United States, Scotland and South Africa.

Hawes is no stranger to women’s rugby in Canada, having coached the national champions, Ontario and what is arguably the strongest women’s club in the country, the Toronto Scottish.
Hawes has been the Lions’ head coach since 2000 and the head coach of the Scottish program since 1995. He has led the Scottish to six Ontario league championships including the last three. Hawes has also been head coach of the Ontario Senior Women’s team since 2003.
"I think this is a great opportunity for our Canadian female athletes, as it will provide exposure to international competition to a larger group of our players," said Hawes. "I am also excited and honoured to participate in this prestigious event."
