Man Wah Wong, professor in York’s Department of Mathematics & Statistics, Faculty of Arts, was elected president of the International Society of Analysis, Applications and Computation (ISAAC) on July 26 at its fifth annual congress held last week at the University of Catania in Italy.

Wong is associate Chair of math & stats at York and also serves as director of the undergraduate program and pure mathematics section. He received his doctorate at the University of Toronto in 1978 and joined York’s Faculty of Arts in 1982. Wong has been recognized for his teaching skills with a Faculty of Arts Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1990 and 1996 and has been visiting professor at universities in the US, Japan and Canada.
“I am pleased and honored to be the new President of ISAAC.” Wong said in his acceptance speech. “The first mission of ISAAC must be upheld as a society promoting analysis, applications and computation as a unity.”
Wong attended some of the talks at the society’s first congress in 1997. In 1999, he organized a special session in pseudo-differential operators at the group’s second congress held in Japan and in 2003 organized the society’s fourth congress at York’s Keele campus.
ISAAC is a non-profit organization established in 1994 to promote and advance analysis, its applications, and its interaction with computation. Analysis is understood here in the best sense of the word, including differential equations, integral equations, functional analysis, and function theory.
