Six members of the York Lions women’s field hockey team have been selected to represent their provinces in the 2005 Canada Summer Games.
York students Nicole Zaharopoulos, Brittney Blount and Emma Horsley will join the Ontario team. Zaharopoulos, who led the Lions last season in scoring is entering her third year of studies in kinesiology. Blount, who is entering her first year at York this fall, will play in goal and Horsley, a second-year kinesiology student, will serve as a reserve player.
Representing New Brunswick are York students Christianne Theriault, Ashley Arrowsmith and Monique Babineau. Theriault, a third-year student in the Faculty of Arts, is a defender with strong tackling skills and game sense. Arrowsmith, a second-year student in kinesiology, will be playing in net, while first-year Glendon student Babineau will play at the striker position.
The Canada Summer Games run from August 6-20, in Regina, Sask. More than 4,500 athletes, coaches, managers and officials from the 10 provinces and three territories will participate in the games.
The games are held every two years at different locations across Canada, alternating between summer and winter sports. The first Canada Games were held in 1967 in Quebec City as part of Canada’s Centennial celebrations.
