The York University Lions men’s and women’s soccer teams emerged undefeated from weekend games against Nipissing and Laurentian.
In men’s action, Lions rookie Joe Vaz scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Nipissing on Saturday, while first-year keeper Greg Zatulovsky recorded his first OUA shutout. Vaz, Mike Pimentel, David Nogaro and Eugene Ishchak scored in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Laurentian. Zatulovsky picked up his second consecutive shutout in goal for the Lions.
Women’s action saw second-year Lions striker Nicole Burling scoring twice, while April Noga added a single as the York women’s soccer team defeated Nipissing 3-1 on Saturday. Third-year goalkeeper Aurelia Gumiela registered the victory in goal. Burling and first-year defender Tania Porretta scored for the Lions in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Laurentian.
The soccer teams will play at the University of Toronto on Sunday.
The Lions football team dropped to 1-1 with a 40-7 loss to Queen’s on Saturday. York will face the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday in the 36th Annual Red and Blue Bowl. The Lions will be without all-Canadian running back Andre Durie, who suffered a knee injury in the loss to Queen’s and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
The women’s rugby team opened its season with a 27-13 loss to Wilfrid Laurier on Sunday. Cheryl Phillips accounted for more than half of York’s points scoring eight points with one try and a penalty goal. Chantale Desroches rounded out the scoring for York with a try.
