One of the leading corporate law scholars in Canada today, Dalhousie University Professor Chris Nicholls, will be visiting Osgoode this term as the Falconbridge Professor of Commercial Law. Nicholls holds the Purdy Crawford Chair in Business Law at Dalhousie Law School. Prior to joining the faculty at Dalhousie, he practised law with two of Toronto's major law firms, then served as a corporate finance and securities attorney in Hamilton, Bermuda. Nicholls is a graduate of the Osgoode LLB ('84) and LLM ('92) programs, and has in the past taught a course in Corporate Finance and Securities Regulation as an adjunct professor at Osgoode.
Nicholls will be teaching Business Associations this term. He will also deliver the Falconbridge Lecture on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 5.30pm at Osgoode's downtown Professional Development Centre, 1 Dundas Street West, Suite 2600.
The Falconbridge Professorship commemorates the scholarly legacy of John D. Falconbridge (left), who graduated from Osgoode in 1899 and served as dean from 1927 to 1947. He was the country's leading scholar of commercial law. The professorship reflects Osgoode's commitment to teaching and research in the legal problems of business.
Previous holders of the Falconbridge Professorship have been Lord Wedderburn of Charlton (London School of Economics), Professor R.M. Goode (Queen Mary College, London), Professor E.P. Ellinger (National University of Singapore), Professor Yoshio Ohara (Kobe University) and Warren Grover, Q.C. (a former professor of law at Osgoode and a member of the law firm Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP).
