For the second consecutive year, the Lions men’s football team used late game heroics to come from behind and top the struggling U of T Varsity Blues, 40-33 in overtime on Saturday, Sept. 17. With the victory, York extends its winning streak over the Blues to 11 games, while retaining the Argo Cup for the 10th straight year.
Trailing 26-16 in the fourth quarter, the Lions scored 17 straight points on a field goal, a 55-yard fumble return by Hamilton Baudner, and a five-yard run in the game’s final minute by Bryan Wheatle to take a 33-26 lead. On the final play of regulation, the Blues tied the game on a six-yard Tony Mammoliti reception, sending the game to overtime.

Ricardo Hudson hauled in his second major of the game on York’s first possession of the extra period and the defence came up big, stopping the Blues offence on back-to-back plays from the York one-yard line to seal the victory.
York returns home this weekend to face the 0-3 Guelph Gryphons at 2pm on Saturday in the annual Homecoming game.
Meanwhile, after opening the season with a pair of victories, the Lions men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against the U of T Varsity Blues on Sunday. First-year keeper Greg Zatulovsky has yet to surrender a goal in the Lions first three games of the season.
The women’s soccer team also battled Toronto to a 0-0 tie. Former Chinese National team member Gao Hong recorded her first clean sheet of the season. The soccer teams will travel to Guelph on Wednesday and Ryerson on Saturday.
York lost 12-10 to Trent in women’s rugby action on Sunday. Cheryl Phillips, last week’s York Athlete of the Week, scored all ten of York’s points. The Lions will play at Queen’s on Saturday.
The women’s field hockey team opened the regular season with a 4-0 win over McGill on Sunday. Goalkeepers Ashley Arrowsmith and Brittney Blount shared the shutout as each played a half. Nicole Zaharopoulos, Monique Babineau, Frankie Vondrejs and Melissa Pascal were the York goal scorers.
The women’s cross country team finished fourth in the 4km Guelph Open on Saturday. Amy Kirkham finished 10th and was the Lions top finisher with a time of 15:31. On the men’s side, Jordan Cober placed 21st as York’s top finisher with a time of 26:05 in the 7km race.
In men’s tennis, York defeated Toronto and Brock, while the women’s squad lost to McGill.
