The York University men’s tennis team captured the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship with a 4-0 victory over three-time defending champion Western on Saturday night in London. The championship victory is York’s first since 1996 and its sixth in school history. York defeated Toronto 6-1 in the semifinals and Western 4-0 in the final.
In women’s tennis action, York captured the bronze with a 5-2 win over Western after losing 6-1 to Toronto in the semifinals.
The York men’s soccer squad is the only team in Canada that has yet to surrender a goal. The Lions’ shutout streak has reached seven games, with first-year keeper Greg Zatulovsky in net for every match. York tied Brock, 0-0 on Saturday before defeating McMaster 2-0 on Sunday. York is tied for top spot in the OUA North Division with Toronto; both teams have identical 5-0-2 records. The Lions now have a week off before hosting Nipissing and Laurentian on Oct. 15 and 16.
The women’s soccer team also had impressive performances this past weekend, winning 2-0 over Brock on Saturday and 1-0 over McMaster on Sunday. The Lions have now won four straight and are undefeated in their last six games. With the weekend victories, York now has 14 points, good for a two point lead over Toronto for first in the OUA North Division. The Lions return to action when they host Nipissing and Laurentian on Oct. 15 and 16.
The Lions field hockey team played four games last week, winning two, tying one and losing one. York dropped a 2-1 decision to Toronto on Wednesday before rebounding to tie Waterloo 1-1 on Friday, and defeating Carleton 3-0 on Saturday and Western, 2-0 on Sunday. York is tied with Toronto for second place in the OUA with a record of 4-2-1.
The football team travelled to London this past weekend to face one of the top-ranked teams in the country. The Western Mustangs showed why they are first in the OUA, using a balanced attack to roll to a 62-10 win over the Lions. The Mustangs found the end zone four times via the run, while wide-out Andy Fantuz hauled in six catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns. York returns home on Saturday to face the Windsor Lancers, a team which the Lions defeated 41-14 in Windsor last year. York is 3-1 in its last four meetings against the Lancers.
The women’s cross country team finished second overall at the Don Mills Memorial race in Waterloo on Saturday. Ruth Weaver was York’s top finisher, placing fifth with a time of 17:34 on the 4.4-kilometre course. Amy Kirkham was a close second, finishing in seventh, just four seconds behind Weaver with a time of 17:38.
In other Sport York weekend action, the women’s rugby team lost 35-17 to Laurier. The women’s swim squad lost to Queen’s but defeated Trent and Laurier at a dual meet on Saturday. The men’s swim team lost to Queen’s, Trent and Laurier.
