Field hockey and soccer teams begin playoffs

In a showdown for top spot in the OUA North Division, the York Lions men’s soccer team came out on the losing end of a 2-0 decision against the No. 7 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues. The No. 9 ranked Lions, who finished the regular season in second place in the OUA North Division with a 5-2-3 record, will host McMaster York Lions goalie Kevin Drucein the opening round of the post-season on Wednesday at 2pm at York Stadium.

The women’s soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a convincing 3-0 shutout over the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues during game action on Sunday afternoon. Nicole Burling scored 14 minutes in with what turned out to be the game-winner, while goalie Aurelea Gumiela made three saves for her sixth consecutive shutout. The Lions improved to 5-0 at home this year, outscoring their opponents 10-0 over that span. York will host second round playoff match-up this Sunday at 2pm at York Stadium.


The field hockey team finished the regular season in fourth spot in the OUA with a 7-5-2 record. The Lions have qualified for the OUA Championship tournament this weekend at Carleton. York opens the tournament against fifth-place Waterloo.


The cross country teams will compete for an OUA title this weekend in Kingston. This past weekend at the Brock Open, Katie Coopman finished 14th overall with a time of 16:13 on the 4km course, leading the Lions’ women’s squad to their best team result of the year (2nd overall).


The football team’s season came to an end with a 38-3 loss to Ottawa on Saturday. York finishes eighth in the conference with a 3-5 record and misses the playoffs for the first time since 2000.


The women’s hockey team continued its remarkable start to the 2005-2006 campaign, skating to a 2-2 draw with the No. 9 ranked Guelph Gryphons. Through five games this season, the young Lions have yet to lose, sporting a 2-0-3-0 record.


Goaltender Kevin Druce backstopped the men’s hockey team to a pair of weekend victories. In Friday’s 2-1 win over Queen’s, Druce stopped 47 of 48 shots. On Saturday, he recorded 32 saves in a 2-1 victory over RMC. With the sweep, the Lions improve to 2-1 on the season.


The women’s volleyball team opened the regular two with a pair of losses on the road. On Saturday, the Lions fell to Western, 3-0, while on Sunday they dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Windsor. The men’s volleyball team will begin defence of its 2004-2005 OUA Championship on Wednesday at Guelph.
