The men’s soccer team came up a game short of advancing to the CIS National Championship, falling, 2-0, to the undefeated Carleton Ravens in the conference semifinals on Saturday at Vauhan’s Ontario Soccer Centre. The Lions also lost on Sunday to Western in the Bronze Medal game, 1-0.
The new was not all bad for York soccer, however, as the women’s Lions captured the provincial championship Sunday in St. Catharines (see More News).
Meanwhile, on the strength of three second period goals, the ninth-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues rode to a 3-1 victory over York’s women’s hockey team at the Ice Gardens Wednesday. Mandy Cole scored the lone goal for the Lions.
The men’s hockey team had its four game winning streak snapped Thursday at the Ice Gardens, when it dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the visiting Waterloo Warriors. On Saturday, the Lions skated to a 3-3 draw with Western. Lions’ defenceman Jon Hedberg scored once and added an assist, raising his team-leading point total to 12.

The Lions’ basketball teams opened the 2005-2006 OUA season on Thursday against visiting Laurentian at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Led by third-year guard Brenan Rurak, the women’s team defeated the Lady Vees, 72-55. Rurak finished with a game-high 28 points, added two steals and shot an impressive 11 of 21 from the floor. She was also 4 of 8 from beyond the arc.
Five Laurentian players scored in double figures as the Voyageurs surprised the Lions’ men’s squad 85-82. Dan Eves finished the night with 28 points and three rebounds in 37 minutes of play. He shot a solid 12 of 23 from the floor. Second-year point guard Tut Ruach recorded 23 points, six assists, and seven rebounds in 40 minutes.
The badminton team competed in its last tie of the year against Toronto. York needed to win this tie to make the playoffs but came up short, losing 7-6. The tie came down to the last three mixed doubles matches. The Lions had a good chance to prevail with their top three men in these matches. Unfortunately, they won only two of the three.
The men’s volleyball team dropped a pair of away games, 3-1 to Western on Saturday and 3-1 to Windsor on Sunday.
