The soccer season came to a quick end Friday for the Lions women’s soccer team at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Championships in Edmonton. Facing the host Alberta Pandas to stay in the running for fifth place, the Lions ended their season with a 3-1 loss and elimination from the tournament, just five days after winning the Ontario championship.
York was behind, 1-0, until April Noga pulled the squad even in the 22nd minute but could not answer the two Alberta goals that followed.
In the quarter-final game against the Victoria Vikes Thursday, Lions goalkeeper Aurelea Gumiela was named the game’s most valuable player after making eight saves. The loss eliminated York from medal contention (see story in the Nov. 11 issue of YFile).
Victoria won the championship over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, 6-0, and the McGill Marlets captured the bronze defeating Calgary’s Dinos, 1-0. At the CIS Awards Banquet on Friday, Lions midfielder Kristy de Vries (right) was named a first team All-Canadian, while Noga (far right) was named a second team All-Canadian.
Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team remained udnefeated on the season with a pair of victories last weekend. Kim Gibbs and Brenan Rurak both scored 14 points as the Lions defeated Waterloo 67-41 on Friday. In Saturday’s 65-63 win over Laurier, the Lions had four players score in double figures: Gibbs (19), Rurak (14), Laura MacCallum (11) and Elspeth Cheng (10). The Lions will host Ontario University Athletics West leader McMaster (4-0) on Friday in a battle of undefeated teams and Lakehead (2-2) on Saturday.
The men’s basketball team won a pair of games on the weekend, defeating both Waterloo and Laurier. York’s Jordan Foebel recorded 16 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks in Friday’s 75-74 victory over Waterloo, while Dan Eve’s chipped in with a game-high 24 points and nine boards. Against Laurier on Saturday, Foebel once again led the way with 17 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals in a 78-57 victory. York hosts McMaster (0-2) on Friday and Lakehead (0-2) on Saturday.
The women’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to three games after defeating both the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 and the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-0. Rookie outside hitter Meghan O’Doherty led York with a game-high 15 kills, while adding nine digs against Waterloo. Outside hitter Elizabeth Salas-Chavez recorded a game-high 13 kills against Laurier.
The men’s volleyball team picked up a pair of straight-sets victories last weekend, defeating Waterloo and the Laurier. Sholan Trivedi led York with 10 kills against Waterloo, while James Battiston and Ryan Anderson each added seven. Jordan Matthews recorded a game-high 11 kills in the victory over Laurier, while Trivedi and Paul Podstawka added nine kills each.
The men’s hockey team dropped a pair of game to the Lakehead Thunderwolves last weekend in Thunder Bay. In the first game, Lakehead scored six goals before captain Steve Chabbert got the Lions on the board late in the third period of a 6-1 loss. In the second game, York came within a minute of splitting the weekend set with the Thunderwolves but fell, 5-3. Darryl Thomson, Mike McKenna and Sean Langdon scored to give the Lions a late 3-2 lead before Mike Wehrstedt stole the show for the Thunderwolves, scoring twice in the final minute of play. The women’s hockey team dropped a pair of games last week, extending its losing streak to four. York lost 2-0 to Waterloo on Saturday despite outshooting the Warriors, 41-29. On Sunday, the Lions lost 5-1 to number one-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks, the defending national champions.
The women’s water polo team fell, 5-1, to the McMaster Marauders on Friday night. York was stifled by the McMaster defence, managing only one goal late in the fourth from Kara Knowles. On Sunday, the Lions played both Carleton and Queen’s, losing, 8-7, in the first game and winning, 9-5, in the second. Julie Csikos led York’s offence in both matches with three goals against Carleton and four against Queen’s. The Lions face Carleton in the OUA semifinals on Nov. 26 at McMaster.
Despite four-goal performances from Jamie Burr and Mladen Mutic, the York men’s water polo team lost, 19-11, to the visiting McMaster Marauders on Friday. Jordan Duffield had York’s other three goals on the night. On Sunday, York lost to Carleton by a score of 16-6 but finished their season on a strong note with a 16-5 victory over Queen’s. Jordan Duffield continued to be a powerhouse for the Lions, providing three goals against Carleton and four against Queen’s.
