The York Lions women’s water polo team earned a silver medal at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship last weekend at McMaster University in Hamilton. The Lions defeated the Carleton Ravens 3-2 in the semifinals. Trailing 2-1 after the third quarter, Julie Csikos scored twice in the final four minutes to lift York to the victory. In the championship final, the Lions lost a thrilling 11-10 decision in overtime to the heavily favoured McMaster Marauders.
The women’s hockey team handed the Canadian Interuniversity Sport number-one-ranked and defending National Champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks their first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night in Waterloo. The Golden Hawks, who entered the contest with a perfect 10-0-0 record, fired 38 shots on goal but could only beat York netminder Melanie Quinn once. The two-time OUA All-Star made her second start in as many days after missing more than a month due to injury. Dorothy Aniuk’s goal seven minutes into the third period proved to be the game-winner. Riley Edwards scored the other Lions goal with just under five minutes remaining in the opening frame. The win was the second straight for York, who snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Western Mustangs on Friday.
The mens’ hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to McGill before losing 5-4 in overtime to Ottawa on Saturday. Rookie Derek Montgomery recorded a hat trick for York, while Steve Chabbert added a single in the loss to Ottawa.

The women’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to six games with straight-set victories over Queen’s and RMC. Ainsley Martinez led York with a team-high nine kills and 13 points against Queen’s, while libero Antonia Stathakos recorded 11 digs. Judith Thompson led the Lions with a team-high 11 points and an impressive five service aces against RMC. Nicole Carleton-Burnham added 10 points and a team-high nine kills.
The men’s volleyball team lost 3-1 to Queen’s on Saturday before rebounding with a 3-0 victory over RMC on Sunday. Ryan Anderson led the Lions with a match-high 18 kills against Queen’s, while James Battiston recorded an impressive nine blocks. Paul Podstawka led the Lions with 16 kills against RMC, while Anderson added eight kills and a team-high six blocks. Both volleyball teams will host Toronto on Friday at the Tait McKenzie Centre (the women will play at 6pm and the men at 8pm).
The women’s basketball team defeated cross-town rivals Toronto and Ryerson last weekend. Laura MacCallum led York with 16 points in Friday’s 89-56 win over the Varsity Blues. Kim Gibbs and Mylaine Mageau each added 15 points. Gibbs had a team-high 11 points in Saturday’s 66-35 victory over the Rams. Mageau and Emily Van Hoof each added 10 points. The Lions are in first place in the OUA East Division with a 6-1 record.
The men’s basketball team lost 86-70 to Toronto on Friday and defeated Ryerson 75-59 on Saturday. Dan Eves recorded a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds against the Varsity Blues, Tut Ruach chipped in with 15 points. Ruach led all scorers with 24 points against the Rams.
