Volleyball’s best will descend on York

The York University Lions men’s volleyball team will host the 27th annual Killer Instinct Excalibur Volleyball Classic on Jan. 6-8, 2006, at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The eight-team tournament includes three top-10 teams from Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

The University of Manitoba Bisons enter the three-day event ranked fourth in the country with a 5-5 regular season record in the Canada West conference (CWUAA). The Ryerson University Rams are in first place in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) with a 9-1 record and are ranked eighth in Canada. The Rams captured 2005’s Killer Instinct Excalibur Classic with a 3-1 win over the host Lions and won the 2004 title with a 3-2 victory over the University of Toronto. The Université Laval Rouge et Or are ranked tenth in the CIS and lead the Quebec Student Sports Federation (QSSF) with an 8-3 record.

The Lions, defending OUA champions, open the tournament against the Queen’s University Golden Gaels. York is in sixth spot in the OUA with a 5-5 record, while Queen’s is tied for second with a record of 8-2.

The University of Western Ontario Mustangs, the Université de Sherbrooke Vert et Or and the Brandon University Bobcats will also compete for the tournament title. The Mustangs are in fifth spot in the OUA with a 7-3 record, while the Vert et Or are third place in QSSF with a record of 7-3. Brandon, which is its inaugural season, is in fourth place in Canada West’s Great Plains Division with a record of 3-7.

The tournament begins at 1pm on Friday, Jan. 6, and runs through to Sunday, Jan. 8, with the championship final set for 3pm. Tournament passes can be purchased on site.
