The University Consortium on the Global South presents a panel discussion Wednesday and day-long symposium Friday to generate discussion about how York is engaged with the global south and the international content of the University’s programs, research and course curriculum.
The two-part event is called University Engagements with the Global South: Internationalization, Graduate Programs and Area Studies. It is meant to generate input and ideas for a conference in March on Internationalizing Canada’s Universities. Participants will include graduate program administrators within York, international and Canadian graduate and undergraduate students, and faculty from regional institutions and outside of Canada.
On Wednesday, the panel will discuss Constructions of Internationalization, Area Studies and the Post-Colonial Question. Pablo Idahosa (African Studies) will serve as Chair, while panellists will include Eduardo Canel (Latin American Studies), Linzi Manicom (Institute for Women’s Studies and Gender Studies, University of Toronto), Gavin Smith (Anthropology, University of Toronto) and Alissa Trotz (Sociology and Equity Studies, OISE). It takes place Feb. 22 in Room 305, York Lanes, 2:30-4:30pm.
On Friday, the symposium will consist of three panel discussions. The first panel,Graduate Studies and Internationalization at York, will feature graduate program directors and administrators from York University. The second panel will feature graduate and undergraduate students on Student Engagement with the Global South at York. The third session, Reflections, Experiences, and the Way Forward, will feature speakers describing their international university experiences and suggesting ways to promote such engagements at York. It takes place Feb. 24 in the Senior Common Room, Founders College, 9:15am-3pm.
