Conservationist Mercedes Lee will be guest speaker Thursday as part of Oceans: The Life Around Us, a winter lecture series sponsored by Bethune College.
Lee, co-founder and vice-president of the Blue Ocean Institute, will give a talk about “Fish as Wildlife, Fish as Food: Seafood Conservation and You” at 4:30pm in Room 102, Accolade East Building.
The Blue Ocean Institute was founded in 2002 to inspire a new relationship with the sea through science, art and literature.
About Mercedes Lee
As director of the institute’s From Sea to Table project, Lee edited Seafood Lover’s Almanac to educate seafood lovers about the fish they eat. Before she helped found Blue Ocean, she served with the National Audubon Society’s Living Oceans Program from 1993 until 2002 and was principal architect of the Seafood Lovers Initiative.
Lee has written widely about energy and the environment, natural history, conservation and green architecture. She wrote a column for American Birds, the book Audubon House, and used to edit Audubon Adventures, an educational publication for teachers and children in grades 3-6. She is currently a member of the board of the Marine Stewardship Council’s Stakeholder Council, a global sustainable seafood certification initiative. Earlier in her career, she produced National Audubon Society’s Footsteps in the Sea: Growing up in the Fisheries Crisis, an award-winning educational documentary.
