Memorial service planned for former York chaplain

York Catholic Chaplaincy will celebrate a special mass April 23 in honour of the late Michael Brosnan, a chaplain at York for 17 years. Father Michael died Feb. 27. He was 76.


The special mass will take place at 7pm in Scott Religious Centre as part of the last Sunday mass of the year, says pastoral assistant Phil Cummings.


A professed member of the Spiritans for 55 years, Father Michael was born in Ireland and ordained as a priest in 1960. He served as a missionary in Nigeria and Brazil, did development work in Yemen, taught philosophy in England and Malaysia, and served as chaplain at York.


Father Michael was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery following a wake March 1 and a funeral mass March 2 at St. Joseph’s Church in Scarborough.


He is survived by his brother Tom, sister-in-law Annette and sister Helen, all of Ireland.
