York’s School of Kinesiology & Health Science has announced the 2006 inductees for the York University Sport Hall of Fame. Four former interuniversity athletes and one coach will be inducted during a dinner and ceremony on May 25.
Created in 1980, the Sport Hall of Fame honours individuals who have significantly contributed to York’s interuniversity sport program as athletes, coaches and administrators, and who have exemplified the spirit and ideals of York University sports in their professional and community life. The selection committee consisted of three varsity alumni, two current student-athletes and several University administrators, including the Chair of Kinesiology & Health Science and the director of Sport and Recreation.
2006 Inductees
Portia Barriffe was a member of the York women’s soccer team from 1988 to 1991. During this time, Bariffe was one the top players in the country, earning four consecutive Canadian Interunivesity Sport (CIAU) All-Canadian and four Ontario Women’s Interuniveristy Athletic Association (OWIAA) All-Star selections.
In four seasons (1976-79) with the York men’s soccer team, Michael Burke was a three-time Ontario University Athletic Association (OUAA) All-Star and one of the nation’s most dominant strikers. At the 1977 CIAU Championship tournament, Burke led York to a gold medal and was named to the tournament All-Star team.
Dave Chambers (left) was head coach of the York men’s hockey team for eight years (1972-77, 1984-87). During that time, York captured three OUAA titles and the school’s first CIAU Championship in 1984-85. The OUAA Coach of the Year in 1976-77, Chambers amassed an impressive conference coaching record of 118 wins, 34 losses and 10 ties. He went on to coach in the NHL and also led Canada to a gold medal at the 1988 World Junior Hockey Championship.
York’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1989, Sean Foudy was a member of both the track and field and football teams from 1986-91. During this time, Foudy won four individual CIAU medals and several individual OUAA medals with the track and field program. He was a second team OUAA All-Star in 1988 with the football team and was a third round draft pick of the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1989 CFL College Draft.
Jill Graham played four seasons (1981-85) with the women’s volleyball team. During her career, York captured four OWIAA gold medals and three CIAU bronze medals. Graham was a three-time OWIAA All-Star and a tournament All-Star at the 1984 CIAU National Championship.
The Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony takes place on Thursday, May 25 at the Montecassino Banquet Hall in Woodbridge. Tickets are $75 per person or $600 per table and are available at the Sport York Office, 302 Tait McKenzie Centre, exr. 55183.
